Pakistani electricity tariffs have made AC usage one of the biggest household expenses of the year. The good news: small habits can cut your AC bill by a third without you ever noticing the difference in comfort.
1. Set the thermostat to 24–26°C
Every degree below 24°C raises consumption by about 6%. The human comfort zone is 24–26°C — anything colder is wasted electricity, not extra comfort.
2. Use the timer
Set the AC to switch off 30 minutes before you leave and 30 minutes before you wake up. The room stays cool from residual chill, but the compressor stops drawing power.
3. Combine with a ceiling fan
A ceiling fan running with the AC at 26°C feels the same as the AC alone at 22°C — but uses one-eighth the electricity.
4. Close curtains during peak sun
Direct sunlight through windows can double the cooling load. Heavy curtains or reflective film on west-facing windows pay for themselves in one summer.
5. Service the AC before summer
A serviced AC consumes 15–25% less power than one that's been running dirty for a year. Pre-summer service in March or April is the smartest single investment.
