Few things are as frustrating as switching on the AC during a 40-degree Islamabad afternoon and feeling lukewarm air. Before you panic-call an emergency technician, work through these seven common causes β many can be fixed in minutes.
1. Wrong mode or temperature setting
It sounds silly, but it's the #1 false alarm. Make sure the remote is set to Cool mode (snowflake icon), not Fan or Dry, and that the temperature is set 4β6Β°C below the room temperature.
2. Dirty air filter
A clogged filter blocks airflow so much that the room never cools. Clean it (see our DIY guide). If the indoor unit is also blowing weakly, this is almost certainly the cause.
3. Frozen evaporator coil
If you see ice on the indoor unit's coils or copper pipes, the unit is frozen β usually because of low refrigerant or restricted airflow. Switch off the AC and let it thaw for 2 hours, then call AF Tech Fix for diagnosis.
4. Dirty outdoor condenser
The outdoor unit dumps heat from your room into the outside air. If its fins are caked with dust, leaves, or pollen, heat exchange fails and cooling drops. A foam chemical wash restores it.
5. Low refrigerant gas
If the AC is several years old and was never gas-checked, it may be running short. Critically, low gas means a leak somewhere β never just refill, always find and fix the leak first.
6. Faulty capacitor or compressor
If the outdoor fan spins but the compressor doesn't kick in (you'll hear no humming), the run capacitor is usually the culprit. It's a Rs 1,500β3,000 part and a 15-minute fix for a technician.
7. Undersized AC for the room
A 1-ton AC will never properly cool a 200 sq ft room with west-facing windows. If the unit runs constantly without ever satisfying, it may simply be too small. AF Tech Fix offers free room sizing surveys.
